1973 Topps #27 Bill Gogolewski

About Bill Gogolewski
Gogolewski made 49 appearances in 1973 with one start, saving six games and going 3-6 with a 4.22 ERA. In April he gave up the first home run in Kauffman Stadium history, to Kansas City's John Mayberry, and he later pitched the last four innings to protect the win in David Clyde's professional debut. His card is #27, in the first series, with the Rangers.
Bill Gogolewski was a 6-foot-4 right-hander from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, who pitched six seasons for the Washington Senators and Texas Rangers, Cleveland and the Chicago White Sox, going 15-24 with a 4.02 ERA and 10 saves in 144 games. The Senators took him out of Oshkosh High School in the 18th round of the first amateur draft in 1965, after a junior year that included a no-hitter. National Guard duty and a sore elbow slowed his climb, and a slider he picked up in the spring of 1970 became his out pitch. That summer he won 14 games and struck out 146 for Pittsfield, leading or co-leading the Eastern League in both. He was the only unanimous all-star pick and made his major-league debut on September 3. From 1973 he worked almost entirely in relief. A back injury ended his career in 1975, and he later chaired the Oshkosh advisory park board.
