The story on this card
Bill Virdon took over the Pittsburgh Pirates in November 1971, when Danny Murtaugh stepped down, and the defending World Series champions won the National League East in 1972 with the best record in the majors, 96-59. Willie Stargell hit 33 home runs and drove in 112 runs. Roberto Clemente hit .312 in 102 games. Steve Blass went 19-8 with a 2.49 ERA, and Dock Ellis went 15-7. Bill Mazeroski was also on the roster, and he is listed with Virdon on the manager-and-coaches card, #517. The Pirates lost the NLCS to Cincinnati three games to two: in Game 5 they led 3-2 in the ninth inning, three outs from the pennant, and the Reds won it on a wild pitch.
