1973 Topps #297 Walt Williams

About Walt Williams
Williams batted .249 in 77 games for the White Sox in 1972 and stole 6 bases. He also volunteered with Cook County's drug-abuse prevention program, speaking to children who were first-time offenders. His 1973 Cleveland card, #297, belonged to the third series.
Walter Allen Williams was an outfielder who broke in with the Houston Colt .45's in 1964 and played parts of six seasons with the Chicago White Sox, where his hustling style included a June 1967 dive for a ball rolling toward the Red Sox dugout. Signed out of San Francisco's Galileo High School, he won the Texas League batting title with Tulsa in 1965 and returned to the majors in 1967 after a trade from St. Louis. His best season came in 1969, when he hit .304 and finished sixth in the American League batting race while striking out only 33 times. Traded to Cleveland in 1972 and to the Yankees in 1974, he closed his major league career in 1975 with a .270 average over 842 games. He later played in Japan and Mexico and managed in the minor leagues in the 1990s.
