1973 Topps #181 Jack Brohamer

About Jack Brohamer
Brohamer played 136 games as a rookie in 1972, 132 of them at second base, and batted .233. He was named to both the Topps and Baseball Digest rookie teams, which is why the Topps All-Star Rookie trophy appears on his 1973 card, #181 from the second series. In 1973 itself he came to camp reportedly overweight, dealt with leg injuries, shared second base with Tom Ragland and hit .220 in 102 games.
Jack Brohamer was a left-handed-hitting second baseman, with time at third, who played nine seasons from 1972 to 1980 for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox. Cleveland drafted him in the 34th round in 1967 and he singled in his first big-league at-bat on April 18, 1972. Compared to Eddie Stanky for his short, stocky build and reckless style of play, he was called Scrappy Jack, and The Hammer as a shortening of his surname. Cleveland traded him to the White Sox for Larvell Blanks on December 12, 1975. In Chicago he became the only major leaguer to homer in uniform shorts, on August 21, 1976, during a Bill Veeck promotion. He signed with Boston as a free agent, returned to Cleveland in a June 1980 purchase and finished there. He batted .245 with 30 home runs in 805 games, then became a detective sergeant with the Oceanside, California, police department.
