The story on this card

Topps #66, from the first series of 1973 and part of the League Leaders subset (#61-68), covers 1972 wins, with Steve Carlton of the Phillies, Gaylord Perry of the Indians and Wilbur Wood of the White Sox. Carlton led the National League with 27 wins for a last-place Phillies club that went 59-97, and he also led the league in complete games with 30. In the American League, Perry and Wood each won 24. Perry went 24-16 with a 1.92 ERA for Cleveland. Wood went 24-17 for Chicago, starting a career-high 49 games and pitching 376 2/3 innings.

Phillies left-hander Steve Carlton included martial arts and meditation in his training. One exercise involved twisting his fist down through a five-gallon bucket of rice. He worked with trainer Gus Hoefling on his conditioning routine. Giants right-hander Gaylord Perry had shared a pitching staff with his brother long before professional baseball. At Williamston High School, Gaylord and Jim threw consecutive shutouts to sweep a best-of-three state championship series. Hoyt Wilhelm helped Wilbur Wood make the knuckleball his primary pitch with the White Sox. Wood set a major league record with 88 pitching appearances in 1968, including 2 starts.
