About Mac Scarce

At Double-A Reading in 1972, Scarce went 4-0 with a 0.46 ERA under Jim Bunning, who advised keeping him in the minors. He debuted July 10 against the Dodgers, won his first game at Shea Stadium on August 2 and finished 1-2 with a 3.44 ERA in 31 games. On August 26 he protected a 4-3 ninth-inning lead with runners on second and third and nobody out, retiring Pete Rose, Joe Morgan and Bobby Tolan. Topps issued his rookie card as #6 in the first series of 1973.

Mac Scarce was a Virginia-born left-handed reliever who pitched in parts of five seasons between 1972 and 1978 for the Phillies, Mets and Twins. At Florida State he threw 7 1/3 innings of relief against USC in the 1970 College World Series final and took the loss when USC won it in the 15th inning. In 1971 he saved 18 games, then an NCAA Division I record. The Phillies chose him in the eighth round of the 1971 draft, and he reached Philadelphia the following summer. Arm trouble began in 1974 and worsened that fall, when Scarce believes he tore his rotator cuff. On December 3, 1974, he went to the Mets with Del Unser and John Stearns in the trade that brought Tug McGraw to Philadelphia. His only appearance as a Met, on April 11, 1975, ended with a game-winning single by Richie Hebner before he had retired a batter. Four days later he was traded to Cincinnati for Tom Hall. He signed with the Twins as a free agent after 1977, pitched 17 games in 1978 and made his last appearance on June 25. He finished 6-19 with a 3.69 ERA and 21 saves, all with the Phillies.
