1973 Topps #3 Jim Lonborg

About Jim Lonborg
Lonborg struck out 143 batters and completed 11 games for Milwaukee in 1972, including 2 shutouts. His 1973 Topps card already carried his new Philadelphia affiliation: #3 in the first series. In his first Phillies season he went 13-16 with a 4.88 ERA across 199 1/3 innings. He made 30 starts and 8 relief appearances.
Jim Lonborg studied biology at Stanford and played summer baseball on teams sponsored by the Orioles before signing with Boston for $25,000 in 1963. His father taught agriculture, and Lonborg originally hoped to become a surgeon. Nicknamed Gentleman Jim for his quiet, friendly manner, he became the first Red Sox pitcher to win a Cy Young Award. In the 1967 World Series he threw a one-hit shutout in Game 2 and a three-hit complete game in Game 5 before losing the deciding game on two days of rest. His major league career lasted 15 seasons, continuing with Milwaukee and Philadelphia, and ended with 157 victories. After baseball, he graduated from Tufts dental school in 1983 and practiced in Hanover, Massachusetts. The Red Sox inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2002.
