1973 Topps #2 Rich Hebner

About Rich Hebner
Hebner had two singles and a double in the 1972 NLCS, a .188 average, as Cincinnati won the series 3-2. Roberto Clemente's death on New Year's Eve numbed the Pirates through 1973, and Hebner's temper flared with manager Bill Virdon in May and again in August. On September 3 he led off the bottom of the 13th against St. Louis with a walk-off inside-the-park home run, with the two clubs battling for first place. His #2 is a first-series card with the Pirates.
Richie Hebner spent 18 seasons in the majors, most of them at third base for the Pittsburgh Pirates teams that won five NL East titles in six years and beat Baltimore in the 1971 World Series. Born in Brighton, Massachusetts, he was a star hockey player at Norwood High School before the Pirates made him their first pick, 15th overall, in the 1966 draft. The left-handed hitter got a September look in 1968, took over third base in 1969 and hit .301, and reached a career-high 25 home runs in 1973. In the 1971 postseason he homered off future Hall of Famers Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry in the NLCS, then off Jim Palmer in the World Series. In the offseason he dug graves at the cemeteries his father supervised, which earned him the nickname "Digger." He signed with the Phillies as a free agent and moved to first base, then played for the Mets, the Tigers, the Pirates again and the Cubs, finishing in 1985 as a pinch hitter. He later spent years as a hitting coach and minor league manager.
