About Bruce Kison

Kison began 1972 on the disabled list with a tired arm after pitching 92 innings of winter ball. He replaced Bob Johnson in the Pittsburgh rotation in June and finished 9-7 with a 3.26 ERA in 32 games, 18 starts. In the NLCS he won Game 3 with 1 1/3 scoreless innings against Cincinnati, which took the series in five games. His 1973 Topps card, #141, is a second-series issue with the Pirates.

Bruce Kison was a right-handed pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1971-79), California Angels (1980-84) and Boston Red Sox (1985), known as The Whip for his sidearm delivery and fearless approach on the mound. As a rookie he relieved in Game 4 of the 1971 World Series and threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings against Baltimore, and he collected a second ring with Pittsburgh in 1979. Shoulder trouble moved him between the bullpen and the rotation for years, and he rebuilt his delivery into a three-quarters motion in the 1973-74 offseason. His best season came in 1976, with 14 wins and a 3.08 ERA. He signed a five-year contract with the Angels after 1979, started Game 2 of the 1982 ALCS, and finished 115-88 with 1,073 strikeouts and a 3.66 ERA over 15 seasons. He later coached for Kansas City and Baltimore and scouted for the Orioles.
