About Rennie Stennett

Stennett was in Puerto Rico playing winter ball in Roberto Clemente's place when Clemente's plane crashed on December 31, 1972, and the Pirates' 1973 season opened in mourning. He belted a career-high 10 home runs, but his average dropped to .242 and he split time between second and shortstop until Dal Maxvill arrived from Oakland in July. Virdon was fired on September 5 with the club 67-69. His third-series Pirates card is #348.

Rennie Stennett was a second baseman who spent nine seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates and two with the San Francisco Giants. Born in Colon, Panama, and raised in the Canal Zone, he grew up in Rod Carew's neighborhood, attended Carew's high school, and pitched to future Pirates catcher Manny Sanguillen on a sandlot team. Scout C. Herbert Raybourn signed him, and the move from outfield to second base came in the Florida Instructional League after 1970. He debuted on July 10, 1971, and on September 1 of that year was in the lineup when Pittsburgh became the first major league team to open a game with an all-minority nine. A hustling leadoff man, he drove in a career-high 62 runs in 1975. He was on the 1979 World Series champions, then took a five-year, $3 million contract from San Francisco through the re-entry draft. The Giants released him on April 2, 1982. He finished with a .274 average, 1,239 hits and 41 home runs, played in Mexico, and signed again with the Pirates in 1989 at 38.
