The story on this card
Each league's 1972 home run title went to a man on this card. Johnny Bench of the Cincinnati Reds hit 40 to lead the National League, and Dick Allen of the Chicago White Sox hit 37, a team record, to lead the American League. Card #62 is the home run entry in the League Leaders subset (#61-68) of the first series of 1973 Topps. Bench's total came in a year the Reds won the NL West by 10 1/2 games and beat Pittsburgh in a five-game NLCS. Allen's 37 powered a White Sox club that finished second in the AL West, 5 1/2 games behind Oakland.
Johnny Bench spent his entire 17-season career with Cincinnati. The catcher won two National League MVP awards and ten straight Gold Gloves, played on two World Series winners and entered the Hall of Fame in 1989. Phillies and White Sox infielder Dick Allen had been a starting basketball guard at Wampum High School. He and brothers Hank and Ron each earned All-State basketball honors before all three reached the major leagues.
