About this card

Cards #61-68 are the League Leaders subset: the 1972 leaders in batting, home runs, runs batted in, stolen bases, earned run average, victories and strikeouts, and the leading firemen (#68), each card naming the National League leader first.

The story on this card

Runs batted in followed the same two names as home runs in 1972. Johnny Bench drove in 125 for the Cincinnati Reds, tops in the National League, while also drawing 100 walks. Dick Allen of the Chicago White Sox led the American League with 113 RBI and also topped it in walks with 99. Card #63 carries the RBI board in the League Leaders subset (#61-68) of the first series of 1973 Topps. Cincinnati reached the 1972 World Series and lost to Oakland in seven games.

Johnny Bench spent his entire 17-season career with Cincinnati. The catcher won two National League MVP awards and ten straight Gold Gloves, played on two World Series winners and entered the Hall of Fame in 1989. Phillies and White Sox infielder Dick Allen had been a starting basketball guard at Wampum High School. He and brothers Hank and Ron each earned All-State basketball honors before all three reached the major leagues.
