1973 Topps #20 Stan Bahnsen

About Stan Bahnsen
Bahnsen struck out 157 batters in 252 1/3 innings for Chicago in 1972. His first-series White Sox card was 1973 Topps #20. On August 21, 1973, he carried a no-hitter against Cleveland into the ninth inning before Walt Williams singled with 2 outs.
Stan Bahnsen pitched 16 major-league seasons for the Yankees, White Sox, Athletics, Expos, Angels and Phillies, winning the 1968 American League Rookie of the Year award with New York. The Yankees drafted the Nebraska right-hander in the fourth round in 1965 after he earned All-Big Eight and third-team All-America honors. Nebraska fans nicknamed him the "Bahnsen Burner." With Chicago, he worked in Chuck Tanner's three-man rotation. His later nickname, "Stanley Struggle," referred to his habit of pitching out of jams. He finished his major-league career in 1982 with California and Philadelphia, then pitched for Triple-A Portland in 1983. His major-league totals included 146 wins, 1,359 strikeouts and 20 saves. He entered the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.
