About Mike Andrews

Andrews played 148 games at second base and first base for the 1972 White Sox, batting .220 with 7 home runs and 50 RBI. His 1973 Topps #42 is a first-series card that lists him with Chicago. The White Sox released him on July 16, and he signed with Oakland on July 31 at the request of manager Dick Williams. In Game 2 of the 1973 World Series he made two errors in the Mets' four-run twelfth inning of a 10-7 New York win.

Mike Andrews was a second baseman who spent most of his eight big-league seasons with the Boston Red Sox before finishing his career with the Chicago White Sox and Oakland Athletics. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Torrance, California, he earned junior college All-American honors as a wide receiver at El Camino College. He signed with Boston in December 1961 and worked his way up through the farm system as a shortstop before shifting to second base. He made one All-Star team, played in the 1967 World Series with Boston and won the 1973 title with Oakland, a Series in which he was at the center of a controversy over his benching. After retiring as a player, Andrews spent decades as a fundraiser for the Jimmy Fund, the Boston-based cancer charity affiliated with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, eventually serving as its chairman.
