1973 Topps #238 Tony Muser

About Tony Muser
Muser's rookie card, #238, sits in the second series of the 1973 set. The photo shows him with the White Sox, where he hit .279 in 44 games in 1972, including his first major league home run off Texas's Jim Panther on September 22. His 1971 callup had come in mid-July, when he filled in while other White Sox served military reserve duty, and he hit .312 in 11 games.
Tony Muser was a left-handed first baseman who played nine major league seasons, 1969 to 1978, for the Red Sox, White Sox, Orioles and Brewers. Signed by Boston in 1967 out of San Diego Mesa Junior College, he was valued for his glove: he handled 433 chances in 1974 with one error and finished with a .992 fielding percentage. At bat he hit .259 with seven home runs in 663 games. After a season in Japan with the Seibu Lions in 1979, he began a second career as a manager and coach, leading Stockton to the 1980 league title and Denver to the 1991 American Association pennant. He served as Milwaukee's third base coach until a natural gas explosion at the Brewers' spring training complex in 1986 burned about half his body. He coached for the Cubs, then managed the Kansas City Royals from July 1997 until he was fired in 2002, and later was Padres bench coach.
