1973 Topps #21 Randy Hundley

About Randy Hundley
The knee that ended Randy Hundley's 1971 season forced him to favor one side in 1972, and his throws were off the mark. He caught 113 of his 114 games and hit .218 with 5 home runs and 30 RBI, the heavy workload of his earlier years having exacted a price. His Cubs card is #21, from the first series of the 1973 Topps set.
Randy Hundley caught for the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Minnesota Twins, and San Diego Padres across fourteen big-league seasons from 1964 to 1977. Signed by the Giants out of Virginia, he was traded to Chicago before the 1966 season and quickly became the Cubs' everyday catcher, setting durability records behind the plate while introducing a one-handed catching style that later catchers adopted. He won a Gold Glove in 1967 and earned an All-Star selection in 1969, the year Chicago held first place for months before fading late. Knee injuries in the early 1970s slowed him, and he finished his playing career with brief stops in Minnesota and San Diego before returning to the Cubs. He later managed in the minor leagues and founded baseball fantasy camps for adult fans.
