1973 Topps #367 Burt Hooton

About Burt Hooton
Hooton went 14-17 with a 3.68 ERA in 42 games, 34 of them starts, for a Cubs club that slid to fifth. After losing his first three August starts he worked two games out of the bullpen, then rejoined the rotation on August 18 with a 9-11 record and a 4.13 ERA. His #367 card, from the third series, pictures him with Chicago.
Burt Hooton was a right-handed starter who pitched 15 seasons for the Cubs, Dodgers and Rangers, relying on a knuckle-curve he developed as a 14-year-old in Corpus Christi. A three-time All-American at the University of Texas, he went 35-3 for the Longhorns and was the second pick of the 1971 secondary draft, signing for $50,000. Chicago traded him to Los Angeles in May 1975, and he won his last 12 decisions that year, a Dodgers record. He won 19 games with a 2.71 ERA in 1978 and finished second to Gaylord Perry for the Cy Young Award. In 1981 he made his only All-Star team, posted a career-best 2.28 ERA and was NLCS MVP as the Dodgers won the World Series. He finished at 151-136 with a 3.38 ERA, then spent decades as a pitching coach, including with the Astros from 2000 to 2004.
