About Carmen Fanzone

Fanzone appeared in 64 games in 1973, 25 at third base behind Ron Santo and 24 at first. He hit .273 with 6 home runs and 22 RBI. The Cubs led the NL East by 8 1/2 games on June 29, then lost 33 of their next 42 games and finished fifth. Card #139, from the set's second series, is his rookie card.

Carmen Fanzone was a utility man who played all four infield spots, mostly third base, in 237 major-league games for the Red Sox and Cubs between 1970 and 1974, and a trumpeter who built a second career in music. A Detroit native who studied music at Central Michigan, he signed with Boston in 1964 and was the Eastern League MVP at Pittsfield in 1968, after a week of spring batting lessons from Ted Williams. The Red Sox traded him to the Cubs for Phil Gagliano in December 1970. After a .327, 28-homer season at Tacoma, he homered on the first pitch he saw in the National League, off Pittsburgh's Steve Blass on September 8, 1971. In 1972 he set career highs with 8 home runs and 42 RBI. On June 18 that year he played the national anthem on trumpet at Wrigley Field, and on September 2 he caught the final out of Milt Pappas's no-hitter, a popup. He finished at .224 with 20 home runs and 94 RBI, played for the Hawaii Islanders in 1975, and moved to Los Angeles in 1976, where he worked as a jazz flugelhorn player and later married vocalist Sue Raney.
