About this card

Cards #61-68 are the League Leaders subset: the 1972 leaders in batting, home runs, runs batted in, stolen bases, earned run average, victories and strikeouts, and the leading firemen (#68), each card naming the National League leader first.

The story on this card

Lou Brock stole 63 bases for the 1972 St. Louis Cardinals to top the National League, and Bert Campaneris stole 52 for the Oakland Athletics to top the American League. Topps paired them on #64, the stolen base entry in the League Leaders subset (#61-68) of the first series. Brock hit .311 with 193 hits that summer and pioneered the rolling start, in place of the traditional method of maximizing his lead. Campaneris clinched his title on the final day. The Athletics' broadcasters learned that Dave Nelson of Texas had stolen three bases in his own game, and Campaneris entered as a pinch-runner in the fourth inning and stole second and third. The Athletics then beat Cincinnati in a seven-game World Series.

Cardinals outfielder Lou Brock had helped Southern University win an NAIA championship. In the final against Omaha University, he hit a tiebreaking home run and drove in three runs in a 10-2 victory. Bert Campaneris was a shortstop and six-time American League stolen-base leader. He spent most of his nineteen major league seasons with the Athletics, collecting 649 steals and 2,249 hits over his career.
