1973 Topps #13 George Hendrick

About George Hendrick
Hendrick spent most of 1972 as a reserve outfielder for Oakland, playing 58 games with a .182 average and four home runs. Card #13 carries the Athletics name. He pinch-hit in each of the first four ALCS games against Detroit, took over in center field when Reggie Jackson was hurt in Game 5, and started five World Series games against Cincinnati. On March 24, 1973 he went to Cleveland with Dave Duncan for Ray Fosse and Jack Heidemann.
George Hendrick was a 6-foot-3 right-handed outfielder who played 18 major-league seasons, 1971 through 1988, for Oakland, Cleveland, San Diego, St. Louis, Pittsburgh and California. Oakland made the Los Angeles native the first overall pick of the January 1968 draft, and he won a World Series ring with the 1972 Athletics. His power bat made him a four-time All-Star, in 1974, 1975, 1980 and 1983, and he won Silver Slugger awards in 1980 as an outfielder and in 1983 as a first baseman. He played for the 1982 St. Louis Cardinals, who beat Milwaukee in seven games for the World Series, and went 9 for 28 with five RBI in that Series. He finished with a .278 average, 267 home runs and 1,111 RBI. He was known as Silent George for refusing to talk to the media, and critics sometimes questioned his hustle in the outfield. After playing he coached in the Cardinals, Angels and Dodgers organizations and was named Tampa Bay's first base coach in November 2005, a post he held through the 2014 season.
