The story on this card
Oakland trailed 2-1 in the ninth inning of Game 4 on October 19, 1972, at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, and won 3-2 to take a 3-1 Series lead over Cincinnati. Gene Tenace had already homered in the fifth for the game's first run, his third of the Series. In the eighth, reliever Vida Blue walked Joe Morgan and Bobby Tolan doubled in two runs to put Cincinnati ahead. In the ninth, pinch hitter Gonzalo Marquez singled, Tenace singled, Don Mincher's pinch single scored pinch-runner Allan Lewis to tie it, and a third pinch hitter, Angel Mangual, singled off Clay Carroll to bring Tenace home. It was the first time a team collected three pinch hits in one World Series inning. Card #206 in 1973 Topps, a World Series subset card in the second series, shows Tenace and the Oakland Athletics.
