About this card

This is one of the 24 team cards, one for each club. Managers appear on separate Field Leaders cards this year, and #500 reads "Oakland A's" on the front.

The story on this card

The 1972 Oakland Athletics won the American League West with a 93-62 record under manager Dick Williams, then beat Detroit in a five-game ALCS and Cincinnati in a seven-game World Series. It was the club's sixth World Series championship and its first since 1930, when it played in Philadelphia. All four wins against the heavily favored Reds were by a single run, and catcher Gene Tenace hit four home runs and drove in nine to take Series MVP. The roster carried Hall of Famers Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter and Rollie Fingers. The A's began wearing solid green or gold jerseys that year, and owner Charlie Finley paid $300 to every player who grew a moustache by Father's Day. Topps #500 is the Oakland Athletics team card, printed in the fourth series.
