1973 Topps #499 Bob Moose

About Bob Moose
Defending the 1971 title, Bob Moose opened 1972 at 0-2 with a 7.32 ERA in his first three starts and went to the bullpen. His next start lasted 11 innings, and a four-hit shutout followed. He finished 13-10 with a 2.91 ERA over 226 innings. Topps listed him with Pittsburgh on #499, a fourth-series card in the 1973 set.
Bob Moose was a right-handed pitcher who spent his entire ten-year major league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, from 1967 through 1976. A product of Export, Pennsylvania, he broke in as a teenager and settled into the rotation the following year. His finest season came in 1969, when he went 14-3 with a 2.91 ERA and no-hit the eventual World Series champion New York Mets at Shea Stadium. Moose was part of Pirates teams that won five NL East titles between 1970 and 1975 and the 1971 World Series. In the deciding game of the 1972 NLCS, his wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth let George Foster score the run that sent Cincinnati to the World Series. A blood clot in his pitching shoulder required surgery in 1974 and cost him most of that season, but he returned to pitch through 1976. He finished his career 76-71 with a 3.50 ERA in 289 games. Moose died in a car accident in Martins Ferry, Ohio, on his 29th birthday.
