1973 Topps #84 Rollie Fingers

About Rollie Fingers
Fingers struck out 113 batters in 111 1/3 innings in 1972, and four times that year he entered a game as early as the fifth inning. After the season Charlie Finley sent him a contract with a $1,000 raise; Fingers phoned to argue, and when Finley would not budge he slammed down the receiver and vowed never to talk to him again. During 1973 he passed John Wyatt's Athletics record of 73 career saves. First-series #84 is his base card with Oakland.
Rollie Fingers pitched 17 major-league seasons for the Athletics, Padres and Brewers and retired with a record 341 saves. Born Roland Glen Fingers in Steubenville, Ohio, he learned to pitch from his father George, a former Cardinals minor leaguer. The family moved to Southern California, and Fingers played both pitcher and outfielder at Upland High School. He turned down a $20,000 offer from the Dodgers and signed with Kansas City for $13,000 on Christmas Eve 1964, believing the Athletics offered a quicker route to the majors. Fingers helped Oakland win three consecutive World Series from 1972 through 1974 and was the 1974 Series MVP. He tied the National League record with 37 saves for San Diego in 1978. Traded through St. Louis to Milwaukee after the 1980 season, he won the 1981 American League Cy Young and Most Valuable Player awards with 28 saves and a 1.04 ERA. An arm injury kept him out of the 1982 World Series and the entire 1983 season. He finished with a 2.90 ERA in 944 appearances, made seven All-Star teams and entered the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992.
