1973 Topps #203 World Series Game No. 1: Tenace the Menace

About this card
Cards #203-210 cover the 1972 World Series between the Oakland Athletics and the Cincinnati Reds game by game, Games 1 through 7, and #210 World Champions closes the run.
The story on this card
Gene Tenace homered in his first two plate appearances in the World Series, both in Game 1 in 1972, the first player ever to do so. The Oakland catcher had hit .225 with five home runs in the regular season and went 1 for 17 in the playoff against Detroit. Oakland played without the injured Reggie Jackson and won Game 1 over Cincinnati, with Ken Holtzman starting and Rollie Fingers and Vida Blue combining for four shutout innings of relief. Blue ended it by getting Pete Rose to ground out to second with the tying run on third. Only Tenace and Bert Campaneris collected hits for the A's, two apiece. The game is card #203 in the 1973 Topps set, in the second series. Tenace finished with four home runs, nine RBI and the Series MVP award as Oakland won in seven games.
