1973 Topps #214 Dave Hamilton

About Dave Hamilton
Charlie Finley phoned Hamilton at Iowa on a Sunday in spring 1972 and sent him to Texas. On Memorial Day he won his debut in the second game of a doubleheader, 7-1, striking out Frank Howard and Rich Billings to end a third-inning jam. He finished 6-6 with a 2.93 ERA in 25 games. In Game Four of the ALCS against Detroit he walked Norm Cash with the bases loaded. His 1973 Topps rookie card is #214, with the Athletics.
Dave Hamilton was a left-handed pitcher from Seattle who worked nine major league seasons, 1972 to 1980, mostly for the Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox. The Kansas City Athletics drafted him out of Edmonds High School in the fifth round in 1966, and he reached Oakland in May 1972 after six minor league seasons. He was on the roster for all three of the A's championship teams from 1972 to 1974 and pitched in three postseason games, all in 1972. In 1974 he moved into the rotation and pitched the only complete-game shutout of his career, a 5-0 win over California on June 26. Traded with Chet Lemon to the White Sox in June 1975, he became a reliever under Chuck Tanner. He later pitched for the Cardinals and Pirates in 1978 before returning to Oakland. He finished 39-41 with a 3.85 ERA and 31 saves. Hamilton coached baseball at California High School in San Ramon from 1996 to 2004.
