1973 Topps #14 Sonny Siebert

About Sonny Siebert
On September 23, 1972, with Boston tied for first place, Siebert started against Detroit on a bad right ankle and lasted a third of an inning, giving up three runs, two of them earned. The Red Sox finished a half game behind the Tigers. He completed seven of his 30 starts that year and threw three shutouts. Texas acquired him on May 4, 1973. His 1973 Topps card is #14, a first-series issue that lists him with Boston.
Wilfred Charles "Sonny" Siebert was a right-handed pitcher born January 14, 1937, in St. Mary, Missouri. A two-sport star at Missouri, he played basketball for three years and helped the Tigers reach the College World Series final in his one season on the baseball team. The Cleveland Indians signed him as an outfielder in 1958, and a minor-league pitching coach later convinced him to switch to the mound. He debuted for Cleveland in 1964 and threw a no-hitter against the Washington Senators on June 10, 1966. He was selected to two All-Star teams, in 1966 and 1971. Traded to Boston in 1969, he went 16-10 for the Red Sox in 1971 while also hitting six home runs. He closed his career with St. Louis, San Diego, and Oakland, finishing 140-114 with a 3.21 ERA over 12 seasons, and later spent years as a minor and major league pitching coach. He was inducted into the University of Missouri Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004 and the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
