About Reggie Smith

Smith scored 75 runs and stole 15 bases for Boston in 1972, batting .270 with 126 hits. His Red Sox card, 1973 Topps #40, came in the first series. On October 26, 1973, Boston traded Smith and Ken Tatum to St. Louis for Bernie Carbo and Rick Wise. Smith finished his final Boston season with a .303 average and 69 RBI.

Carl Reginald Smith, born April 2, 1945 in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised in Los Angeles, was a switch-hitting outfielder who spent 17 major league seasons with the Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants from 1966 to 1982. He hit .287 with 2,020 hits, 314 home runs and 1,092 RBI, drew seven All-Star selections, and won a Gold Glove in the outfield. A five-tool talent with one of the strongest throwing arms of his era, Smith reached the World Series four times, hitting three home runs in the 1977 Fall Classic for the Dodgers. He broke into the majors in 1966 after leading the International League in batting for the Toronto Maple Leafs, then endured a difficult racial climate in Boston before finding a more comfortable fit in St. Louis alongside Bob Gibson and Lou Brock. After his playing days he coached for the Dodgers and USA Baseball, including Olympic teams.
