1973 Topps #69 Phil Gagliano

About Phil Gagliano
Gagliano served as Boston's player representative during the 1972 labor talks, then nominated Carlton Fisk for the job after play resumed. He collected 21 hits and scored 9 runs that season. His 1973 Topps #69, from the first series, still names the Red Sox. In late March 1973, Boston traded Gagliano and Andy Kosco to Cincinnati for pitcher Mel Behney.
Phil Gagliano was a utility infielder and outfielder who spent parts of twelve major league seasons, 1963-1974, with the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds. A Memphis native, he signed with the Cardinals in September 1959 out of high school for a $10,000 bonus and reached the majors on April 16, 1963. He finished with 171 games at second base, 133 at third, 64 in the outfield corners and 30 at first, batting .238 with 336 hits, 14 home runs and 159 RBIs in 702 games. He was farmed out to Jacksonville in July of the Cardinals' 1964 title season and left off the World Series roster, though he was awarded a three-quarter share; he did play in the 1967 and 1968 Series, beating Boston in seven games and then losing to Detroit in seven. From 1971 through 1973, with the Red Sox and the Reds, he established himself as one of the majors' top pinch hitters. His younger brother Ralph reached Cleveland for a single game in 1965. Gagliano worked in liquor sales and then as an operations manager after baseball, and died in Hollister, Missouri, in December 2016, at age 74.
