1973 Topps #317 Danny Cater

About Danny Cater
Boston planned to use Cater as its regular first baseman in 1972, but manager Eddie Kasko benched him after 14 games and a .120 average. After he hit .221 over the first three weeks of August, Carl Yastrzemski replaced him at first base. Cater appeared in one game after August 20 as the Red Sox finished 85-70, a half-game behind Detroit, and he called the season a nightmare. Topps #317, from the third series, has him with Boston.
Danny Anderson Cater was born February 25, 1940, in Austin, Texas, and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies at age 18 in June 1958. He played twelve major league seasons, 1964-1975, for the Phillies, White Sox, Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Yankees, Red Sox and Cardinals, filling in at first base, third base and the outfield. He was the 1968 American League batting runner-up at .290, behind Carl Yastrzemski's .301, the lowest average ever to win a major league batting title, and led American League first basemen with a .995 fielding percentage that year. He hit a career-best .301 for the 1970 Yankees. Traded to Boston before the 1972 season along with Mario Guerrero for reliever Sparky Lyle, he retired with a .276 average, 1,229 hits, 66 home runs and 519 RBI, and later worked at the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts office in Austin.
