The story on this card
The 1972 San Diego Padres, in their fourth season, went 58-95 and finished sixth in the National League West, playing at San Diego Stadium. Preston Gomez managed the first 11 games (4-7) before Don Zimmer took over and went 54-88. The pitching staff allowed 665 runs against 488 scored. Nate Colbert scored the winning run in the All-Star Game at Atlanta, wearing a road jersey reading SAN DIEGO because he had packed the wrong uniform. A week later he tied Stan Musial's record with five home runs in a doubleheader against the Braves, driving in 13 runs. On July 18, Steve Arlin was one out from the first Padres no-hitter when Philadelphia's Denny Doyle singled. Colbert has #340 in the same series; this team card is #316 in the third series of 1973 Topps.
