About Royals Field Leaders (Jack McKeon / Galen Cisco / Harry Dunlop / Charlie Lau)

McKeon was 42 when he succeeded Bob Lemon in 1973, after running the Omaha Royals, Kansas City's Triple-A club, from 1969 through 1972. His team went 88-74, second in the American League West, six games behind Oakland, the best record in the franchise's five years. His #593 is a managers-and-coaches card with Galen Cisco, Harry Dunlop and Charlie Lau, all printed with the Royals. It is a fifth-series high number. Jack McKeon managed in the majors for the Royals, Athletics, Padres, Reds and Marlins, winning the 2003 World Series at age 72. As Padres general manager he earned the name Trader Jack and assembled the 1984 pennant winner.

Cisco became Kansas City's pitching coach in 1971 under manager Bob Lemon. On 1973 Topps #593, he appeared with manager Jack McKeon and fellow Royals coaches Harry Dunlop and Charlie Lau. Galen Cisco was a right-handed swingman for the Red Sox, Mets and Royals in the 1960s who later spent nearly three decades as a big-league pitching coach, winning back-to-back World Series titles with the 1992-93 Toronto Blue Jays.

Dunlop was on Kansas City's coaching staff in 1972. The 1973 Topps Royals Field Leaders card, #593, paired him with manager Jack McKeon and coaches Galen Cisco and Charlie Lau. Harry Dunlop progressed from catching in the Pirates' farm system to managing clubs including Stockton, San Jose and Wichita. His later major league coaching work included Kansas City and Cincinnati.

Lau, Kansas City's hitting coach since 1971, shared the Royals' 1973 Topps card, #593, a fifth-series high number, with manager Jack McKeon, Galen Cisco and Harry Dunlop. Lou Piniella, who played for Kansas City from 1969 through 1973, called Lau "the greatest batting instructor of them all." Charley Lau played 11 major league seasons as a catcher and pinch hitter, then coached five American League clubs. His hitting pupils included George Brett, Reggie Jackson, Harold Baines and Ron Kittle.
