1974 Topps #623 Celerino Sanchez

About Celerino Sanchez
Sanchez batted .219 in 1973, with 14 hits in 64 at-bats. He appeared in 34 games, 11 of them at third base and two in the outfield. His only major-league home run came on May 12 at Yankee Stadium off Mickey Scott of the Baltimore Orioles. Topps released its 1974 set in January 1974 with Sanchez as #623, listed with the Yankees.
Celerino Sanchez was a Mexican third baseman who played 105 games for the New York Yankees across 1972 and 1973 and hit .242. Born in El Guayabal, Veracruz, he starred in the Mexican League from 1964 to 1971, primarily with the Tigres del Mexico, before joining the Yankees organization in 1972. The arrival of Graig Nettles in 1973 pushed him into a backup role, and that year was his last in the major leagues. He returned to the Mexican leagues in 1976, played there until retiring in 1979, and was elected to the Mexican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994. He died in Leon, Guanajuato, on May 1, 1992.
