1974 Topps #48 Dick Sharon

About Dick Sharon
Sharon was recalled from Toledo in May 1973 after Willie Horton went on the disabled list with a wrist sprain, and he debuted May 13 as a defensive replacement in right field against Milwaukee. On July 10 he went 4-for-4 with two home runs, and on July 15 he started in right as Nolan Ryan no-hit Detroit with 17 strikeouts. He finished with seven home runs in 91 games and was named the Tigers' Rookie of the Year. His rookie card is #48 in the 1974 set, with the Tigers.
Dick Sharon was an outfielder who played for the Detroit Tigers in 1973 and 1974 and the San Diego Padres in 1975, hitting .218 with 13 home runs in 242 games. A multi-sport athlete at Sequoia High School in Redwood City, California, he was the Pittsburgh Pirates' first-round pick, ninth overall, in the 1968 draft. When his final paycheck from Double-A Waterbury bounced, his brother, a law student, found that the contract required payment within 30 days of the season's end and that a violation nullified it. Sharon took that to Pirates general manager Joe Brown, who offered to double his salary if he played for Charleston in 1972, and that November the Pirates traded him to Detroit for Jim Foor and Norm McRae. Under new manager Ralph Houk in 1974, he had appeared in 18 of Detroit's first 45 games by May 30. He went to San Diego with Ed Brinkman in a November 1974 trade for Nate Colbert. In 1975 he started 35 of his 91 games and drove in a career-high 20 runs. His last big-league home run came September 7, a solo shot off Houston's Dave Roberts. Chronic back problems ended his career in 1976 at Triple-A Pawtucket. He later worked as a fishing guide in the United States and Central and South America.
