1974 Topps #445 George Medich

About George Medich
Medich won a career-high 19 games for the 1974 Yankees, matching Pat Dobson's total, and lost 15 with a 3.60 ERA. He completed 17 of 38 starts in 279 2/3 innings. The Yankees played their home games at Shea Stadium that year while their own park was rebuilt. He won five straight complete games in July and was named AL Pitcher of the Month. Card #445 pictures him as a New York Yankee.
Doc Medich was a 6-foot-5 right-handed starter who pitched eleven big-league seasons, 1972 through 1982, for the Yankees, Pirates, Athletics, Mariners, Mets, Rangers and Brewers, finishing 124-105 with a 3.77 ERA and 16 shutouts. He was also a physician: an Aliquippa, Pennsylvania native who played tight end at the University of Pittsburgh, he entered its medical school in 1970 and earned his MD in 1977, working out an arrangement with the Yankees that let him pitch while he studied. The Doc nickname followed him from his first Yankees camp. He was the last Yankee winning pitcher at the original Yankee Stadium, a shutout of Detroit on September 29, 1973. His one postseason appearance came for Milwaukee, two innings in Game 6 of the 1982 World Series. His 1981 season in Texas, 10-6 with a 3.08 ERA, tied for the American League lead in shutouts.
