About Horace Clarke

Clarke hit .263 with 155 hits and 11 steals for the Yankees in 1973. Of his 148 appearances, 147 were at second base. His 1974 Topps card, #529, listed him with New York. In May, Yankees general manager Gabe Paul sold him to San Diego for $25,000 in cash. Clarke hit .204 in 66 games between the two clubs in 1974.

Horace Clarke was a switch-hitting infielder from Frederiksted, St. Croix, in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the fifth player from the territory to reach the majors. He signed with the Yankees in 1958 and worked his way up through their farm system, crediting the Puerto Rican Winter League with sharpening his skills. Clarke debuted with New York in May 1965 and by 1967 had taken over as the regular second baseman, a job he held for seven straight years. A leadoff man and contact hitter, he played 1,272 major league games, more than any other Virgin Islands native. Clarke played through the Yankees' decline after 1964. Criticism from sportswriters and fans bothered him at the time, though manager Ralph Houk and columnist Phil Pepe spoke up for him. He finished his career with San Diego in 1974.
