The story on this card
Danny Ozark's Phillies spent 1973 in their third season at Veterans Stadium and finished 71-91, last in the National League East, 11 1/2 games behind the Mets. Steve Carlton, paid $165,000 as the highest-salaried pitcher in the game, never recovered from a spring training illness and went 13-20. Jim Lonborg and Ken Brett, both acquired from Milwaukee, and Wayne Twitchell each won 13 games, and Twitchell's 2.50 ERA ranked third in the league. Greg Luzinski led the club with 29 home runs and 97 RBIs and hit .285. Rookie Mike Schmidt hit .196 and struck out 136 times in 367 at-bats.
