About Chris Chambliss

On April 26, 1974 Chambliss, Dick Tidrow and Cecil Upshaw went to the Yankees for Fritz Peterson, Steve Kline, Fred Beene and Tom Buskey, a deal the New York press labeled the Friday Night Massacre. He hit .255 with 6 home runs and 50 RBI across the two clubs and took boos at Shea Stadium, the Yankees' temporary home. Topps #384 for 1974 still has him with the Indians.

Chris Chambliss was a left-handed-hitting first baseman who played 1971 through 1988 for Cleveland, the Yankees and Atlanta. Cleveland made him the first pick of the January 1970 draft after a .583 run to NBC tournament MVP with the Anchorage Glacier Pilots, and he won the 1971 American League Rookie of the Year Award. A 1974 trade sent him to New York, where he batted cleanup for the 1976 pennant winner, made the 1976 All-Star team, and won a Gold Glove in 1978. His home run off Mark Littell in the ninth inning of Game 5 of the 1976 ALCS gave the Yankees their first pennant since 1964. He won World Series rings in 1977 and 1978, then played for Atlanta from 1980 to 1986, and retired with a .279 average and 185 home runs. He later managed Charlotte and London in the minors, was Sporting News minor league manager of the year in 1990, and coached hitters for the Yankees, Cardinals, Mets, Reds and Mariners, including Yankees titles in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000.
