1974 Topps #81 Frank Duffy

About Frank Duffy
Duffy played 158 games at shortstop for Cleveland in 1974 and batted .233 with 8 home runs. On July 19 he went deep in the hole to throw out Joe Rudi in the fifth inning of Dick Bosman's no-hit bid against Oakland. Afterward he said he had to backhand the ball on an in-between hop, but he knew he could throw Rudi out if he fielded it cleanly.
Frank Duffy was a glove-first shortstop who played ten seasons in the majors, 1970 through 1979, for the Reds, Giants, Indians and Red Sox. A three-sport athlete at Turlock High School, he graduated from Stanford with a psychology degree, was named a Sporting News All-American in 1967, and was the sixth pick of that year's draft by Cincinnati. Reds manager Sparky Anderson preferred Dave Concepcion at short, and Duffy was moved twice in a single year, first to San Francisco and then to Cleveland. He started at shortstop for the Indians for six seasons and placed near the top of the league's shortstops in fielding percentage in each of his first five years there. He closed his career with the Red Sox in 1978 and 1979, and finished with a .232 average and 26 home runs in 915 games.
