1974 Topps #13 Tom Hilgendorf

About Tom Hilgendorf
Hilgendorf had gone 5-3 with six saves and a 3.14 ERA for a last-place Indians team in 1973. Card #13 shows him with Cleveland. During the 1974 season a fan hurled a steel folding chair that hit him in the Ten Cent Beer Night riot of June 4.
Tom Hilgendorf was a left-handed relief pitcher who threw a fork ball and pitched in the majors for the St. Louis Cardinals, Cleveland Indians and Philadelphia Phillies in 1969, 1970 and 1972 through 1975. A native of Clinton, Iowa, he signed with the Cardinals in 1960 after attending St. Mary's High School there, and reached the majors in 1969 as a 27-year-old rookie, debuting against Atlanta. In 1972 he had a 2.68 ERA in 19 games for Cleveland. His best year was his last, 1975, when he went 7-3 with a 2.14 ERA in 53 games for the Phillies. He finished 19-14 with a 3.04 ERA and 14 saves. In July 1974 he dove fully clothed into a pool at a motel near Disneyland and pulled out a 13-year-old boy who had cramped up. He died in Iowa City in 2021.
