1974 Topps #14 Paul Popovich

About Paul Popovich
Popovich hit .236 with 2 home runs and 24 RBI for the 1973 Cubs. Eighty-four of his 99 games came at second base. His 1974 Topps card, #14, lists him with Chicago. As the 1974 season got underway he was traded to Pittsburgh for pitcher Tom Dettore, and he went 3-for-5 in the Pirates' NLCS loss.
Paul Popovich was an infielder from Flemington, West Virginia, who played parts of eleven major league seasons between 1964 and 1975 for the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Pittsburgh Pirates. He played baseball and basketball at West Virginia University, where he was a basketball teammate of Jerry West, before signing with the Cubs as an amateur free agent in 1960. After hitting .313 with 17 home runs for the Texas League's Amarillo Gold Sox in 1963, he broke into the majors in 1964 and eventually became a utility man who played second base, shortstop, and third base. Early in 1969 the Dodgers traded him to the Montreal Expos, who sent him on to the Cubs, and his utility work in Chicago earned him the nickname Supersub. He finished his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, reaching his only postseason in the 1974 NLCS against his former Dodgers club. He hit .233 in 682 major-league games.
