About Cubs Field Leaders (Whitey Lockman / J.C. Martin / Hank Aguirre / Al Spangler / Jim Marshall)
On June 29, 1973, Whitey Lockman's Cubs were 47-31 with an 8 1/2-game lead in the National League East. They then lost 33 of 42 games, including 11 straight in August. They finished fifth at 77-84. Lockman had succeeded Leo Durocher as manager in July 1972 and was relieved of the job on July 24, 1974. He shares manager card #354 with J.C. Martin, Hank Aguirre, Al Spangler and Jim Marshall. At 18, Giants center fielder Whitey Lockman homered off George Dockins in his first major league at-bat on July 5, 1945. He added a two-run double and drove in four runs against St. Louis at the Polo Grounds.
J.C. Martin shares the Cubs manager panel #354 with Whitey Lockman, Hank Aguirre, Al Spangler and Jim Marshall. His last big-league game had come on August 12, 1972, and the Cubs released him in spring training of 1973. He then served on their 1974 coaching staff. J.C. Martin caught for the White Sox, Mets and Cubs over fourteen big-league seasons, taking his best-known turn as a backup receiver on the 1969 world champion Mets.
Aguirre appears on #354 in the 1974 Topps set as a Chicago Cubs coach, in the manager and coaches subset. Whitey Lockman, J.C. Martin, Al Spangler and Jim Marshall share it with him. He served as the club's bullpen coach in 1973 and its pitching coach in 1974. Cleveland left-hander Hank Aguirre walked 10 batters but threw a 3-hit shutout in his first major league start. He beat Detroit 7-0 in the second game on September 24, 1955.
Spangler managed the Double-A Midland Cubs in 1972 and 1973. His 1974 Topps appearance came on Chicago's manager-and-coaches card, #354, alongside Whitey Lockman, J.C. Martin, Hank Aguirre and Jim Marshall. During his Midland tenure, an August 6, 1972, game against the Amarillo Giants had to be suspended because grasshoppers infested the field. A left-handed outfielder and Duke All-American, Al Spangler played for four major league franchises from 1959 through 1971, collecting 594 hits and batting .262 in 912 games.
Marshall had spent 1971 through 1973 handling Triple-A assignments in the Cubs system when the club promoted him to third-base coach for 1974. Card #354 is the Chicago Cubs manager and coaches card: Whitey Lockman headlines it, with J.C. Martin, Hank Aguirre, Al Spangler and Marshall shown below. On July 25, with the Cubs at 41-52, Marshall replaced Lockman, and the club went 25-44 the rest of the way to finish 66-96. Jim Marshall was a left-handed first baseman-outfielder who played for the Orioles, Cubs, Giants, Mets and Pirates from 1958 to 1962, spent three seasons in Japan, and later managed the Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics.
