1974 Topps #157 Vic Harris

About Vic Harris
Harris and Bill Madlock reached Chicago on October 25, 1973, in the trade that sent Ferguson Jenkins to Texas; Rangers manager Whitey Herzog had called Harris "the most valuable property in our organization." He started 30 of the Cubs' first 33 games at second base. On July 7, with Harris hitting .195, a collision at second with the Braves' Darrell Evans led to knee surgery that ended his season. Card #157 is printed with the Cubs.
Vic Harris was a switch-hitting utility player who appeared in 579 major-league games between 1972 and 1980 for the Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants and Milwaukee Brewers, covering second base, shortstop, third base and all three outfield spots. A Los Angeles High School graduate who starred at Los Angeles Valley College, he was Oakland's first-round pick in the 1970 secondary draft and reached the majors when the A's traded him to Texas on July 20, 1972. He debuted the next day and went hitless in his first 36 at-bats, a modern record for debut futility, before an RBI single off Stan Bahnsen on August 8. His last big-league game, on October 5, 1980, ended with a walk-off single in the 15th inning against Oakland, the club that had drafted him; it was the only walk-off hit of his career. With no major-league offers, he signed with Japan's Kintetsu Buffaloes for 1981 and hit .268 with a team-leading 22 home runs. On July 5 against Seibu he became only the fourth player in Japanese baseball history to homer from both sides of the plate in one game.
