1974 Topps #231 Dick Tidrow

About Dick Tidrow
Tidrow was 1-2 with an 8.36 ERA after three starts in 1974, and two days after his fourth he, Chris Chambliss and Cecil Upshaw went to the Yankees for Fred Beene, Tom Buskey, Steve Kline and Fritz Peterson, a trade dubbed the Friday Night Massacre. He finished 12-12 with a 4.16 ERA across both clubs and earned his first career save on September 12 against Baltimore. His #231 lists him with the Indians.
Dick Tidrow pitched 13 seasons, 1972 to 1984, for the Indians, Yankees, Cubs, White Sox and Mets, finishing 100-94 with a 3.68 ERA and 55 saves. He came up as a starter, throwing 237 1/3 innings for Cleveland as a rookie, and Yankees manager Bill Virdon moved him to the bullpen late in 1974. He was a setup man alongside Sparky Lyle on the Yankees teams that won American League pennants in 1976, 1977 and 1978, the last two also World Series champions. He picked up the nickname Dirt with the Yankees, for his rumpled look and his habit of getting his uniform shirt dirty before a game started. With the Cubs from 1979 he led the majors with 84 relief appearances in 1980. After retiring he scouted for the Yankees from 1985 to 1993, then joined the Giants and became director of player personnel in 1997. With general manager Brian Sabean he built the clubs that won the 2010, 2012 and 2014 World Series, drawing on a farm system that produced Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner and Buster Posey. He died on July 10, 2021, at 74.
