About Rick Dempsey

Behind Thurman Munson in New York, Dempsey caught 31 games in 1974. He hit .239 with two home runs and 12 RBIs, and received tutoring from coach Jim Hegan. His season included a September 29 hotel-lobby fight with teammate Bill Sudakis, two games before the end of a pennant race the Yankees were still in. Card #569 pictures him with the Yankees.

Rick Dempsey caught in the major leagues for 24 seasons, from a 1969 debut with the Minnesota Twins to a final game with the Baltimore Orioles in 1992. He was a defensive catcher, valued for handling pitchers, a strong arm and agility behind the plate, and he finished with a .233 average, 96 home runs and 1,093 hits. The Orioles used him as their starting catcher for ten and a half seasons after a June 1976 trade, and no one caught more games for the club. He batted .385 in the 1983 World Series and was named its Most Valuable Player, and he was a Dodgers backup on another World Series winner in 1988. His rain-delay pantomimes, ending in a belly slide on the tarpaulin, were a Baltimore trademark. The Orioles inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 1997. He later managed in the minors and coached and broadcast for the Orioles.
