1976 Topps #79 Jerry Morales

About Jerry Morales
Card #79 pictures Morales with the Cubs. In late May 1976 four men attacked him and an off-duty police officer, and he was cut on the head and hurt his back. In August he was hospitalized with back spasms and missed 13 games. He still played 140 games and hit .274 with 67 RBI, and his 12 outfield assists were third best among NL right fielders.
Jerry Morales was a Puerto Rican outfielder who played 15 major league seasons between 1969 and 1983, mostly for the Chicago Cubs, with stops in San Diego, St. Louis, Detroit and New York. Born in Yabucoa, he was taught outfield play at a clinic by Roberto Clemente as a teenager, and signed with the Mets in 1966 at 17 after helping Puerto Rico win silver at the Central American and Caribbean Games. The Padres took him in the 1968 expansion draft, and the Cubs acquired him in November 1973 for Glenn Beckert. He played all three outfield positions with good speed and was known for a two-handed basket catch below the belt. He led the 1975 Cubs with 91 RBI, hit a career-best 16 home runs in 1976 and represented Chicago at the 1977 All-Star Game. He retired with 95 home runs, 570 RBI and a .259 average in 1,441 games, then coached and scouted, including a stint as Washington's first base coach in 2007 and 2008.
