About Cecil Cooper

Cooper played 123 games in 1976, splitting time between first base and designated hitter, and hit .282 with 15 home runs. The year before he had hit .311 in 305 at-bats and gone 4-for-10 in the ALCS. Manager Don Zimmer told him after the season that first base would be his, but on December 6 he was traded to Milwaukee. Topps issued him as #78 with Boston.

Cecil Cooper was a left-handed first baseman who played 17 seasons, 1971 to 1987, for the Red Sox and the Brewers and hit .298 with 2,192 hits and 241 home runs. A native of Brenham, Texas, he was drafted by Boston in the sixth round in 1968, and he reached the 1975 World Series with them as a platoon player. Traded to Milwaukee for George Scott and Bernie Carbo in December 1976, he reworked his stance along the lines of Rod Carew's and hit .300 or better every year from 1977 to 1983. In 1980 he batted .352 with 219 hits and led the American League with 122 RBIs. He made five All-Star teams, won two Gold Gloves and three straight Silver Sluggers, played in the 1982 World Series and received the Roberto Clemente Award in 1983. Afterward he worked as an agent, a Brewers farm director and coach, and managed the Houston Astros from late 2007 to September 2009, going 171-170. He is in the Brewers Walk of Fame, the Brewers Wall of Honor and the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame.
