About Fred Lynn

Three Lynn cards came out in 1976. Card #50 carries the All-Star Rookie trophy. Card #192 shares the American League batting leaders with Rod Carew and Thurman Munson; Lynn was second at .331, behind Carew's .359. Card #196 shares the RBI leaders with George Scott and John Mayberry. The season itself soured: after holdouts that ended with a five-year contract in August, he hit .314 with 32 doubles in 132 games and told the Boston Globe, "For the first time in my life, baseball isn't fun."

Fred Lynn was a left-handed center fielder who played 17 seasons (1974-1990) for the Red Sox, Angels, Orioles, Tigers and Padres, hitting .283 with 306 home runs. A three-time national champion at USC, he was a second-round Red Sox pick in 1973. In 1975 he became the first player to win Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in the same season, and on June 18 that year he hit three home runs and drove in 10 runs at Tiger Stadium. With fellow rookie Jim Rice he was dubbed one of the Gold Dust Twins. He earned four Gold Gloves and nine All-Star selections. Traded to California in January 1981, he was ALCS MVP in 1982 despite the Angels' loss, and in 1983 hit the only grand slam in All-Star Game history. Injuries from all-out play meant he never played more than 150 games in a season. He was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2002.
