About Ted Williams

Williams homered in his last major league at-bat, on September 28, 1960. In 1976 Topps made him card #347 in its All-Time All-Stars subset, which runs from Lou Gehrig through Lefty Grove, and listed him with the Boston Red Sox. At his 1966 Hall of Fame induction he called for Negro league stars Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson to be recognized.

Ted Williams spent his entire 19-year major league career with the Boston Red Sox (1939-1942, 1946-1960), playing primarily in left field. His career was interrupted twice by military service: three years in the Navy and Marine Corps during World War II, then portions of 1952 and 1953 as a Marine combat aviator in the Korean War. He finished with a .344 batting average, 521 home runs and 1,839 RBI. His .482 career on-base percentage is the highest of all time. In 1941 he batted .406, and no American or National League hitter has topped .400 since. Williams won the Triple Crown in 1942 and 1947, took American League MVP honors in 1946 and 1949, won six batting titles and was an All-Star in 17 seasons. His last two batting crowns came in 1957 and 1958, at ages 39 and 40. His only World Series came in 1946, a seven-game loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. The baseball writers elected him to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966, his first year of eligibility. He later managed the Washington Senators and Texas Rangers from 1969 to 1972, and his work with the Jimmy Fund helped raise millions for cancer care and research.
