About Bill Madlock

Both 1977 cards show Madlock with the Cubs. Card #1 pairs him with Kansas City's George Brett on the league leaders card, and his 1976 average of .339 had edged Ken Griffey Sr.'s .336 after a 4-for-4 final day against Montreal. Contract talks with owner Phil Wrigley failed, and on February 11, 1977 he went to San Francisco with Rob Sperring for Bobby Murcer, Steve Ontiveros and a minor-league pitcher. His own Cubs card is #250.

Bill Madlock was a right-handed third baseman who won four National League batting titles, 1975 and 1976 with the Chicago Cubs and 1981 and 1983 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. That made him the first player to win multiple batting titles with two clubs. He played 15 seasons from 1973 to 1987 for the Rangers, Cubs, Giants, Pirates, Dodgers and Tigers, finishing with a .305 average, 2,008 hits and 163 home runs. He grew up in Decatur, Illinois, and the Washington Senators signed him after a scout saw him swing in an American Legion game. He was an All-Star in 1975, 1981 and 1983, and hit three home runs for the Dodgers in the 1985 NLCS loss to St. Louis. His 2,000th hit came off Bruce Hurst at Fenway Park on September 23, 1987, and he played 1988 in Japan for the Lotte Orions. He also had a fiery temper: he was ejected from 18 games as a player, and a 1980 incident with umpire Jerry Crawford brought a $5,000 fine and a 15-game suspension.
